A leading congressional opponent of the Iraq war welcomed the formal end of US combat operations on Tuesday but warned of the increased reliance on private mercenaries.

"The President is rightly celebrating that less American troops are in harm's way," Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) said Tuesday night. "I join the President in that celebration."

"We need to dispense with the fiction, though, that this announcement in any way diminishes our financial or resource commitment to Iraq," he continued.

The Great Lakes Compact is an agreement that protects all of the Great Lakes, among other things, from the exploitation of its water through removing the water from the Great Lakes in bulk.

All of you have heard about the stories where people wanted to bring transports into the Great Lakes and then fill them up with Great Lakes' water and then just leave. For years I've been working to try to stop this and we've been successful in stopping it. You cannot remove water in these big transports. And let's face it; water is the most precious commodity on the planet.

There's tremendous conflict occurring all over the world where people are trying to get access to water. Well we have it here. We are on the greatest fresh water supply in the world on the Great Lakes.
