WTOL: Congressman Kucinich visits Toledo to campaign
TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - Congressman Dennis Kucinich brought his effort to unseat Toledoan Marcy Kaptur Friday night to her hometown.
The two will meet in the March 6 Democratic primary in the re-designed 9th Congressional District that now includes a portion of Kucinich's Cleveland district.
Mr. Kucinich paid a surprise visit to 'First Friday', a monthly social networking event at the Sophia Quintero Arts and Cultural Center.
He says he came to celebrate Latino culture, language, art and music.
"It's because I think Latinos are important to the future of the United States." said Kucinich.
Kucinich says he's not campaigning against Kaptur, but instead telling people what he stands for: jobs, health care, education and retirement security for all.
"Too much of our politics today tears everything down. Causes people to feel politics is a hopeless mess. It's not. It's a path to make the world a better place." Kucinich explained.
'First Friday' offers complementary food and drink but also a healthy dose of conversation and opinion.
Folks at the Center have mixed feelings about Mr. Kucinich.
"Well, I hate to say this but I'm a Marcy guy" says Center Executive Director Joe Balberas.
"I'm not sure yet. We all like Marcy. I'm not sure yet." adds Lisa Canales.
Robert Torres says he backs Mr. Kucinich:
"I'm going to vote for what's best for our Latino community and Dennis has my support."
Meanwhile, Mr. Kucinich says he'll run a clean campaign and if elected in November, fight for Toledo:
"I'm fully aware that I'm in a territory my friend has represented for many years. I know that. But I also think it's important for people to know that it would be my honor to be their representative as well."
Ms. Kaptur has been invited to the March 'First Friday' event.
