Congressman Kucinich Supports Medicare Pay Reforms |

(November 19, 2009) Congressman Dennis Kucinich addresses H.R. 3961 during House of Representative debate on the Medicare Physician Payment Reform Act of 2009.
Congressman Kucinich stated:
Washington D.C. (November 19, 2009) – During debate of H.R. 3961 - Medicare Physician Payment Reform Act of 2009, Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) today made the following statement:
"Madam Speaker, I rise in support of H.R. 3961, the Medicare Physician Payment Reform Act. Medicare is one of the most popular government programs in part because, in contrast to private insurance plans, seniors and people with certain disabilities can have access to their doctor of choice. Doctors will be less willing to participate, however, if they are not sufficiently paid, as is the case now. I have met with doctors and doctor representatives in the Cleveland area to discuss the issue and the urgency is clear. We must maintain incentives that lead to a high standard of care. I am especially supportive of the extra growth allowance for primary care services as a small down payment toward addressing a severe shortage of primary care physicians. For those reasons, I support the Medicare Physician Payment Reform Act."
"Unfortunately, the bill also includes statutory-pay-as-you-go requirements. Our country's economy continues to flounder in the worst downturn since the Great Depression, yet Congress insists on passing legislation that will constrain our ability to respond appropriately to our economic circumstances."
"The nation's unemployment rate is over 10%, and is likely to remain high well into the next year. The private sector is slashing payrolls and squeezing productivity out of the employees who remain, stubbornly refusing to contribute to an economic recovery. The government must be the spender of last resort to get Americans working again. While the Recovery Act has certainly helped to stave off a more severe economic downturn, it is obviously insufficient. We have more work to do, but pay-as-you-go requirements will only inhibit our ability to help our constituents."

Of all the torrent of words that followed House passage of its version of healthcare reform legislation in early November, perhaps the most misleading were those comparing it to enactment of Social Security and Medicare.
Sadly no. Social Security and Medicare were both federal programs guaranteeing respectively pensions and health care for our nation's seniors, paid for and administered by the federal government with public oversight and public accountability.
While the House bill, and its Senate counterpart, do have several important reform components, along with many weaknesses, neither one comes close to the guarantees and the expansion of health and income security provided by Social Security or Medicare. |

Congressman Dennis Kucinich after voting against H.R. 3962 addresses why he voted NO, stating:
"We have been led to believe that we must make our health care choices only within the current structure of a predatory, for-profit insurance system which makes money not providing health care. We cannot fault the insurance companies for being what they are. But we can fault legislation in which the government incentivizes the perpetuation, indeed the strengthening, of the for-profit health insurance industry, the very source of the problem. When health insurance companies deny care or raise premiums, co-pays and deductibles they are simply trying to make a profit. That is our system."

We have worked together for many years to write, promote and campaign for HR676, a single payer, not for profit health care system. Your work, in communities across America, has been instrumental in helping at least ten states create single payer movements, with many more states to come.
Tomorrow, the House of Representatives is scheduled to consider a single payer bill. As the two principal co-authors of the Conyers single payer bill, we want to offer a strong note of caution about tomorrow's vote. |

(November 4, 2009) Congress Kucinich Receives Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary.
On Tuesday evening, Congressman Dennis Kucinich received the highest civilian award presented by the Republic of Hungary, the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit, in a ceremony at the Hungarian Embassy in Washington, D.C.
The Prime Minister of Hungary nominates individuals based on their achievements and outstanding efforts in support of the Hungarian Community. The award is granted by the President of the Republic of Hungary, Dr. Laszlo Solyo.

Our Last Chance on State Single Payer Option |

Dear Friends,
Thank you for all of your efforts on behalf of the Kucinich Amendment for a state single payer option which would protect the right of states to pursue a single payer health care system.
Unfortunately, the House Leadership has rejected the many appeals on behalf of the amendment and will not reverse their decision which removed the amendment from the bill. Therefore, the Kucinich Amendment for a state single payer option will not be included in the Manager's Amendment and is not in the bill which will come before the House soon. |
